In the late 1960s the situation for US guitar manufacturers became increasingly difficult as Japanese made guitars looking very similar to US guitars began to flood the market but at a much lower price. These guitars increasingly challenged the US manufacturers dominance on the market and one American company reacted to that development in an innovative manner. The C.F. Martin Guitar company of Nazareth, Pennsylvania chose not take any legal steps but instead launched a counter offensive and in 1970, “Sigma Guitars” was born.
The Sigma brand was a tremendous success and justifiably so. Hand crafted by specially trained staff in the most efficient guitar factories in Japan, they were then sent to the US for inspection before being released for sale and shipped to the music stores.
Production was eventually moved to Korea and with along with new model numbers came the development of a new logo. From that point, the headstock on every guitar was proudly emblazoned with the logo: “Sigma Guitars Est. 1970”.
“Sigma Guitars” standing amongst musicians grew quickly, developing an excellent, and in many instances, even legendary, reputation. Some models were said to be of such outstanding quality, both, in construction and sound that they challenged the US models on which they were based. Not surprisingly then, very few second-hand Sigma guitars come up for sale with owners swearing by their instruments and refusing to part with them. There are Sigma fans, Sigma communities, Sigma websites and even collectors who specialise solely in Sigma guitars.
In recent years, the German Musical Instrument Distributors, AMI, took over the Sigma legacy and have shown incredible committment and respect to this fine tradition. As a distributor of high quality acoustic and classical guitars for more than 25 years, AMI have been honoured to obtain the rights of the highly respected name “Sigma Guitars Est. 1970” and the distinctive Sigma logo.
