First introduced in the early 1950s, Gibson's legendary P90 single coil pickup produced a raw powerful tone that helped define the blues and rock and roll in their formative years. Today, the P90's traditional combination of high output and brilliant tone is still considered a favorite among many top musicians. Known by such familiar nicknames as the "Soapbar" and the "Cobalt," the P90 still cuts through any type of music, all while displaying amazing tonal sensitivity for everything from blues and rock to mellow jazz riffs. The P90 is a surprisingly versatile pickup and adds some girth to the single coil charm tones favoured by country and western swing artists. It's perfect as a vintage replacement, and features vintage, braided two-conductor wiring. It's also fully wax potted to eliminate any chance of unwanted microphonic feedback.

The materials used and overall build quality is on par with the best Gibson instruments however the reviews will tell you that they are not perfect.

As with almost every brand name bass or guitar - and we include the biggest brands in this - they are setup to tolerances deemed acceptable by the manufacturer - a sort of one-size-fits-all. Newbies almost always don't know the difference and experienced players pay to have them setup.

The truth is that most guitar manufacturers can't afford to invest much effort into the final setup process. A professional setup involves precision - precision requires time and, time is money. The major manufacturers are focused on providing instruments at attractive prices. Add in the fact that every player's requirements are unique and you have something that is simply impossible to provide at the factory level.

When you buy a guitar from southcoastmusic that has undergone our Pro-SCM setup, you buy confidently knowing that an experienced technician has not only "checked" your guitar, it has been adjusted and set it up to play at its best. Frets dressed and crowned if required, fret ends hand rolled for a supremely comfortable played-in feel, the nut deburred and string slots adjusted, saddle, intonation, pickup height - whatever we feel is needed to provide a playing experience second to none. Expect to pay at least $250 for this as a paid job - its included in our price.
