FENDER SQUIER CLASSIC VIBE 70s TELECASTER THINLINE ELECTRIC GUITAR
THE SQUIER STORY
The Squier story is an interesting one. The V.C. Squier company was the biggest string manufacturer in the US. Along comes Leo Fender, business man and investor from California with his strange new electric guitars.
A subsequent arrangement between the Squier and Fender companies emerged and Squier became the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for Fender’s strings in 1963.
Squier was already firmly established in the acoustic string market, so the addition of string production for electric stringed instruments was a natural step.
In 1965, a quick swing of acquisitions happened – Fender acquired Squier, then CBS acquired Fender, with the Fender brand eventually replacing the Squier name from the instrumental string line.
Fast forward to 1982 and Fender relaunched Squier as as a low-cost “value brand” alternative initially manufactured and distributed in the Japanese domestic market and soon offered to Europe, North America and the rest of the world. At the time, many other established brands offered affordable copies of classic Fender models including the Stratocaster®, Telecaster®, Precision Bass®, and Jazz Bass® guitars. When Squier versions of these instruments appeared, demand for them as the “official” cost-conscious alternatives was immediate and an iconic brand name was reborn.
