Maintaining the Audio-Technica tradition of clear and transparent sound quality, the U853A cardioid condenser hanging microphone is ideal for speech, theatre, orchestra and choir sound reinforcement and recording.

The U853A cardioid condenser hanging microphone’s fast transient response and low distortion characteristics allow every complex detail to be heard with all its impact—rich, vibrant qualities faithfully reproduced.

Equipped with UniGuard® innovations that offer unsurpassed immunity from radio frequency interference, the U853A accepts interchangeable elements, available in cardioid, hypercardioid, omnidirectional and UniLine™ line cardioid polar patterns.

The Audio-Technica U853A cardioid condenser hanging microphone has been designed with the utmost of versatility in mind and can be powered through its integrated battery supply or seperate phantom power from a mixing console or dedicated phantom power supply. The AT8531 Phantom Power Supply module adds a level of versatility to the AT-U853A that makes it a must have in any Audio-Engineers microphone arsenal. Simply take a line out of the module, connect it to your transmitter and voila!…a wireless choir microphone!

The Audio-Technica U853A microphone also provides an 80 Hz low-cut UniSteep® filter that reduces pickup of low-frequency ambient noise.

The 853 series hanging choir microphones have become the accepted industry standard…once you have used them, you’ll understand why.

A uniform 120° angle of acceptance provides well-balanced audio pickup. The microphone should be located forward of the front-most
source, above the rear-most source, and “aimed” between them (Fig.1). Increasing the height of the mic above the sources will tend
to equalize sound levels between them, but may also increase background/reverberant sound pickup. When possible, the distance
from the mic to the rear-most pickup should be no more than twice the distance to the front source, to maintain front-to-rear balance (Fig.1).

Width of pickup is approximately three times the distance to the closest performer. If additional mics are needed for wide sources,
they should be positioned apart laterally at least three times the distance to the front source, to avoid phase cancellation (Fig.2).

To orient the microphone in the proper direction, twist the housing slightly in its wire holder. (Clockwise rotation moves the microphone
to the right; counterclockwise rotation moves it to the left.)
