Lark 4/4 Size Violin Outfit Professionally Setup Includes Original Case and Bow

This violin was hand made in Shanghai, China in the early 1970s. While it’s true that Lark Violins have a mixed reputation, many players began their journey on a Lark. I bought a Lark violin in Adelaide back in the early 1980s and still own it. While today I own better (and more expensive) violins, I always found my Lark to be a good, reliable instrument which is why I agreed to take this one in, set it up and sell it on behalf of the family of the original owner.

This is one of many of the late Fay Overall’s instruments. Fay was a highly respected violin teacher in the Shoalhaven area of NSW, and she owned many superb instruments. Fay also had a big heart, and she kept some of her violins to help out students who, despite being full of enthusiasm, were for one reason or another, without an instrument. This 4/4 size Lark is one of those instruments. The finish has faded around the long-gone fingerboard markers as has the outline of the music note decals that once adorned its face. While they are very feint and can only just be seen, they add a further element of charm and nostalgia.

Hand crafted with a solid Spruce top and Maple back and sides, this violin has undergone a comprehensive setup in our workshop with the following work done:

· Shape & fit Maple bridge
· Clean, condition & polish chin rest, tailpiece & pegs
· Lubricate fine tuners
· Fit pegs to peg box, apply peg soap
· Clean and polish body
· Shape nut and cut nut slots to optimise playing height in first position
· Clean, treat and polish fingerboard
· Restring with D’Addario Prelude Medium Aluminium NW 4/4 Violin Strings
· Adjust as required, tune/test – all ok
· Clean, polish and apply rosin to bow

This Lark violin would be an ideal “first” instrument as well as being suitable for ensemble work. It is an excellent playing example of an early Chinese made violin and comes compete with bow and original case.
