At first glance of the NTR you’re aware that it’s very special and unique – an intricate blend of art and science. What sets it apart from other Ribbon microphones is clear… 1) the RØDE NTR was conceived, designed and built right here in Australia
2) the RØDE NTR, benchmarked against the World’s best – sounds amazing,
3) the RØDE NTR has just lifted the benchmark up a few pegs
4) the RØDE NTR is affordable and has just redefined what can be bought for this price! Designed to hang in the world’s finest recording studios and performance halls equally as well as home studio spaces, its existence is a labour of love for RØDE. Every element of the NTR, from the transformer to the ribbon element itself, has been designed and created in-house at RØDE’s headquarters in Sydney, Australia. All with the aim of crafting the finest ribbon microphone available. Sonically, the NTR is capable of reproducing unprecedented high frequency detail and accuracy, addressing common criticisms of other ribbon microphones, while opening up the possible usage scenarios considerably. This allows it to record sound sources that usually require a more sensitive microphone element. Featuring a wide 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, the NTR Active Ribbon Microphone from Rode is based around a sensitive 1.8-micron-thick ribbon element that’s suspended in an internal shock mounting system to reduce internal noise. It is capable of handling up to 130 dB of SPL, providing versatility in what sources can be placed in front of the mic. A ribbon-securing travel screw in included to help protect the element when transporting the mic. Like many Rode microphones the NTR has an extended 10-year warranty with registration, which includes one free ribbon replacement during the period.

Since these rhythm patterns cover a wide range of musical styles, it is easier to get into the feel of the song being played, making otherwise routine personal practice sessions more enjoyable. click on image to enlarge In 1982 Robert Godin produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of working musicians. Hand made in Canada, the Seagull Excursion Series sets a new benchmark for affordable North American made acoustic guitars.
Seagull have taken a different approach with the Excursion series and the Natural Dreadnought SG features a 3-layer lamination of real Canadian Hardwood – Wild Cherry for the Top, Back & Sides. This lamination means that this guitar has a light yet incredibly strong top that resonates freely with a superb tone straight out of the box that is both powerful and articulate. Other features include a burn stamped rosette, semi-gloss Custom Polished finish, and Seagull Slim neck with slimmer nut width.
click on image to enlarge The Seagull Natural Dreadnought SG is beautifully understated, with the only decoration being the burn stamp ‘rosette’ that reads “Handcrafted in the village of Princeville Quebec Canada”, which is a nice reminder that you’re playing a Canadian built guitar that feels, sounds and looks at lot more than it costs! We sincerely believe that you will struggle to find a guitar that’s better made at this price. The internal bracing and kerfed linings are impeccably crafted. The Silver-Leaf Maple neck, too, with its solid Rosewood fingerboard, tidy frets and slightly rounded edges, comes with quite a supremely comfortable and eminently playable electric-like neck shape and width. Combined with an impressive setup and quality enclosed 14:1 ratio tuning machines, not to mention a Compensated Tusq® saddle by on the rosewood pin bridge, this is a guitar centred on affordability and quality over bling and on-paper specifications. Of course, none of the above matters an iota if it doesn’t play well and sound good. And that’s where you’re in for a treat. Aside from being a really easy, positive player, there’s a real strength to the tonality and big, open rock voicings sound huge when you dig in with a pick. Upper-fret lead lines also have power and strength. Wire are the definitive Art Punk and Post-Punk Band. Wire formed in London in October 1976 with Colin Newman (vocals, guitar), Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar) and Robert Gotobed (drums). The first Art-Punks, the four musicians evolved fast from their groundbreaking 1977 debut album Pink Flag , with its 21 short, sharp, minimalist bursts of noise and melody. Originally associated with the punk rock scene, their debut album “Pink Flag” remains one of the most influential hardcore punk recordings and was described by one reviewer as perhaps the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk. Included on The Roxy London WC2 album, Wire later became central to the development of Post-Punk. Wire’s musical evolution exhibited a steady development from an early noise rock style to a more complex, structured sound involving increased use of guitar effects and synthesizers (1978’s Chairs Missing and 1979’s 154). Through the use of their richly detailed and atmospheric arrangements and obscure lyrical themes the band continues to be a major contemporary influence. Without Wire, punk rock might never have developed beyond primitive three-chord thrash and cliched songs about tower blocks and dole queues. Wire were major catalysts in the shift from punk to post-punk, paving the way for the likes of Magazine, Gang of Four, Public Image Limited and Joy Division.
Paul Lester’s book tells the story of this crucial transitional band, from their early days dodging hostile crowds at punk venues like the Roxy, through to their attempts to inject some arthouse experimentation and Situationist subversion into an increasingly conservative punk scene. The book covers their split in 1981 and beyond their mid-80s return and their various solo projects taking you behind the scenes with candid interviews with the original members. This seminal read follows Wire up to the present, poised as they are to come back with a brand new album and filled with a renewed sense of vigour as one of the most important bands in the last thirty years. If you even have a passing interest in the evolution of Punk, Art-Punk and Arthouse musical experimentation, this is a book that you won’t want to put down. Here are three tracks from the huge body of music that is WIRE. 12XU (1977) Colin Newman (vocals/guitar): “12XU was one of our first songs as a four-piece. I wanted to deconstruct rock music, to make it sound like it came from somewhere else”. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT (1978) Colin Newman (vocals/guitar): By this point I was obsessed with taking the “’n’roll” out of rock’n’roll and making it very precise. It felt dark and mirrored the times. I knew that this was something nobody had heard before. With hindsight, you might say we’d invented post-punk. SHORT ELEVATED PERIOD (2017) Colin Newman (vocals/guitar): “When it was played on BBC 6 Music’s Roundtable, the lady from the Guardian [Kate Mossman] said that she liked the way that Wire have never wallowed in their past. It’s very gratifying when people say our new stuff is as good as anything we’ve done”. - High Performance USB 2.0 Audio Interface
