THE KURZWEIL STORY

The Kurzweil story is a truly amazing and inspirational one.
Founded by Ray Kurzweil, who, at that time, had been working with Stevie Wonder on developing a reading machine for the blind. It was during their collaboration that the inspiration for a Kurzweil digital musical instrument was born.
“Stevie Wonder was our first customer for the Kurzweil Reading Machine (the first print-to-speech reading machine) in 1976. We became friends and had many conversations about technology as applied to both disabilities and music. In 1982, while giving me a tour of his new “Wonderland” music studio, Stevie asked if it would be possible to build a bridge between the powerful control methods of computer music (in which a broad variety of input devices could be used to control any available sound) with the beautiful sounds of acoustic instruments such as the piano and guitar. I thought about it, and concluded that it would be feasible. Kurzweil Music Systems was born in 1982 with Stevie Wonder as musical advisor.
In 1983 Kurzweil Music Systems (KMS) released the K250, which presented to the world the first successful attempt to realistically emulate the sound of a grand piano in a digital keyboard. Over the next 25+ years, KMS released in succession a series of digital keyboards that were considered the pinnacle of music technology in their day, among them the K2000, the PC88x and K2500. As a testament to how far ahead of their time these instruments were, they are still commonly used and requested by high profile artists around the world.
The current offerings from KMS, which include the highly successful PC3 family, are used by some of the biggest names in the music industry: Andrew Lloyd Weber, Roger Waters, The Who, Earth Wind and Fire, The Boston Pops, Amanda Palmer, Billy Joel, and Paul McCartney, to name a few.
With a small R&D facility located 12 miles west of Boston, the KMS team still meets regularly with Ray Kurzweil, who now serves as a strategic consultant for the company. KMS continues to build on its legacy as a major innovator in the music technology inspiring professional musicians, music students and weekend musicians alike.

THE KURZWEIL KA120

The Kurzweil KA-120 offers a world of musical magnificence and inspiration simply waiting for the command of your fingertips. The 88-note, fully weighted hammer action keyboard with adjustable strike dynamics offers four levels of adjustable touch sensitivity. In an acoustic piano, this adjustment is called regulating the action and can take a day to accomplish. It is here at the press of a button.

There are 600 high quality preset sounds that include Kurzweil’s Triple Strike Piano, Electric pianos, organs, synthesizers, guitars, basses, orchestral strings), Brass and woodwinds, percussion instruments and more. The Kurzweil Performance Assistant offers added expression and versatility with Dual, Lower Voice/Split, Harmony, Twinova, a Pitch/Bend wheel and built-in digital effects (10x Reverb, 8x Chorus, 6x EQ, Sustain).

The KA120 functions beautifully as a stand alone portable Digital Piano. However, for those that like to push their boundaries of creativity, 230 pre-programmed auto-accompaniment styles offer interactive patterns in a variety of genres. You can also program up to 10 of your own accompaniments. The Kurzweil Performance Assistant will help you in playing idiomatic guitar and piano phrases through the triggering of only a few keys. Work through strums, broken chords, and even phrase endings.

Each accompaniment consists of an introduction/intro, two selectable main motifs with two rhythmic transitions (Fill) and an ending, where the introduction and ending can be enhanced with a Fade in/Fade Out effect.

The chordal character of the accompaniment can be determined by striking one or two keys (Single Finger) or by playing the entire chord (the KP300X chord library can recognize 31 different chords). The automatic accompaniment’s separate volume and tempo settings and the easy recall of set parameters (One Touch Setting function) ensure that your virtual backing band will always play exactly as you want it to.

This is a fantastic tool for new learners, intermediates and creators alike!

A pair of headphone out connections allow for silent practice and review between student and teacher while a MIDI connection gives you even more musically expansive power.

The KA120 also offers 120 preset compositions that you can easily learn thanks to programmed lessons. A MIDI recorder allows the recording and storage of five user tracks.

Additionally, there is onboard memory capable of storing 48 of your favorite piano settings, a chord library, five demo tracks, compatibility with MIDI software on your PC via a USB cable, data storage or playback of files from a USB flash drive, Connection to another MIDI device/controller via MIDI IN/OUT connectors, Aux In for playing or jamming to your favorite tracks from your audio/MP3 device, Aux Out output to connect your hi-fi rig/speakers to the keys, microphone input and two headphone outputs for quiet and undisturbed practice or a separate output for an external switch/sustain (included). Basic volume, tempo or metronome functions are standard.

This is the Kurzweil KA120 and everything is housed in a stylish chassis with four built-in speakers with a total power output of 70W. All controls are clearly arranged on the front key panel, and the multifunction LCD display will always reliably inform you of the current settings. A removable Music Rest is included as is a 240VAC-12V power supply.
